7 Weeks

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is a U.S. Department of State merit-based scholarship program for U.S. high school students to study critical languages abroad in an immersive environment. The NSLI-Y summer program is 6-7 weeks long and offers intensive language instruction, a host family stay for all or part of the program, and a variety of cultural activities designed to enhance language skills. During the NSLI-Y summer program, participants receive a minimum of 120 hours of classroom instruction in intensive language classes. Beyond the classroom, they engage with host families, complete assignments, and participate in cultural activities and peer language partner sessions. NSLI-Y summer program participants gain insights into their host culture and represent America to the local community as citizen diplomats. No prior language learning experience is required for participation. NSLI-Y summer programs support multiple language levels but cannot accommodate students at Advanced-Mid or higher proficiency levels. Applicants may be subject to language testing prior to receiving a scholarship offer to verify eligibility. Many NSLI-Y summer program alumni participate successfully in other language learning and cultural exchange programs and continue to use their target language in their academic and professional careers and home community.
